CJHS Lady Maroons softball heads for playoffs

CLINTON — The Clinton Junior High softball team has ended its regular season and has begun playoff games.

In their final home stands, the Lady Maroons had mixed results.  On eighth grade recognition night, the ladies got in their ceremony and the first half inning before the thunder, lightening and rains came washing out the contest.

The team will be cut in half with the 8th grade class moving on.  Those honored were; Mallory Cyrulick, Kianna Easton, Morgan Fortune, chloe Griffin, Kaitlin Mahoney, Maddie Mearida, Courtney Osgood, Taylor Osgoodm, Kylie Raymer, Maddie Scott, and Kaylee Yost.

After the rain-out, the Lady Maroons met the Monticello Lady Sages, who came to town with bats ready.  The Lady Sages took a 2-1 lead in the first inning and didn’t look back.  Holding the Lady Maroons to only one other run in the 6th inning the Monticello team proceeded to unleash their power with 4 runs in the second, 3 runs in the third, and then blasted home 6 runs in the seventh inning to seal their win 15-2.

As the Lady Maroons have done all season, they bounced back in their final home stand against the Sullivan Lady Redskins.  The Lady Maroons built a 5-1 lead by the second inning, but the Lady Redskins added 3 runs in the third to close within one run.  The home team added an insurance run in the bottom of the third.

The Lady Maroons brought in a relief pitcher in the fourth inning to shut down Sullivan offense to only one run in the fifth inning while the Lady Maroons added 2 runs each in the 4th and 5th innings for a 10-5 win.

Although the year was up and down, the team did win 4 of 5 games in their own Clinton 3D tournament to take third place and Coach Kellie Elbert has a good base of 6th and 7th grade players to build on for next season.
