CLINTON — April 13 saw the Lady Maroons of Clinton Junior High take to the hardwood against the Lady Sages (with the Owl mascot) of Monticello. 

The games began with the 7th graders on the floor.  The Lady Maroons took the first quarter easily with quick hands and break away baskets to lead 12-2.  The second quarter was the calm before another storm as neither team scored until 2 minutes and 30 second were left in the half. 

The third quarter was as explosive as the first as the home team was like gnats swarming the opposition, forcing them into several errors.  This gave the Lady Maroons a chance to seal the game with a second 12-2 run.  The Lady Sages out-scored the home team 6-5 in the final quarter, but it was to no avail as the Lady Maroons won 35-12.  The home team was led by Clara Dempsey (#25) with 18 points.

Next on the evening’s agenda was the 8th graders’ game.  This game started with a bit of a surprise as the opposition took the early lead in the first quarter. 

With a slight lead, the Lady Sages felt confident but maybe too much so.  While holding the opposition to single digit scoring, the Lady Maroons cut loose into double-digit scoring in the final three quarters.  Again the Lady Maroons used steals and their swarming technique to fluster the opposition. 

By the end of the game, the Lady Maroons had won 44-30.  A closer game than they had wanted or expected, but their no loss season is still intact. 

The 8th grade team was led R. Filkin with 17 points and A. Helfand with 12 points.  Filkin had two 3-point baskets while C. Dempsey added another.
