CLINTON — On Tuesday, March 28, the Clinton Maroon junior varsity baseball team played a home game against the Shelbyville Rams in the dreary cold of spring. Although the fans were bundled, the Maroons were hot as a summer trade wind.
Neither team focused on the first inning, which went by quickly. In the second the visiting Rams scored a single run in the top of the inning followed by three runs from the home team.
This would be enough to seal the game, but the Maroons were on a roll. The home team added 2 more insurance runs in the third inning, and then went crazy in the fourth scoring a blistering 9 runs.
The final tally was Clinton 14-Shelbyville 1. Garrett Wayne picked up the win with Michael Oswald coming in to pitch the last strikeout.
Then, on the following Friday, March 31, the junior varsity Maroons traveled to Farmer City to play the Blue Ridge Knights.
Blue Ridge, having the home field advantage, took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. In the top of the third inning Clinton evened the score only to have the Knights add another run in the bottom of the inning.
In the fourth inning, Blue Ridge was able to load the bases, which were cleared by a triple, followed by a single driving in the 4th run of the inning. The Maroons finally scored a run in the fifth, but Blue Ridge answered with three more runs.
The sixth inning saw both teams adding to their totals, Clinton with 3 runs and the Knights with two runs.
In the final inning Clinton added 3 more runs to come close to a win, but not quite enough. Blue Ridge won this battle 12-9.
