CLINTON — This past week, the Clinton High School commons has been the site of two college signings.  

As Athletic Director Barry Gurvey always announces, “It is a great day for Clinton High School when a student athlete signs with a college to continue their education and sports interests.”  

First to sign was Maggie Werts, the daughter of Marc Werts and Mary Toohill.  Maggie signed her Letter-of-Intent to attend Lincoln College to study physical therapy courses with emphasis on respiratory therapy and to continue her track career.  

Maggie chose Lincoln College because of its strong physical therapy program and the feeling of being part of the family from the coaches and track team.  This feeling of belonging reminded her of her Clinton track and field team experience.  Head track andfield coach Brian Henson for the Lincoln Lynx has been impressed with Maggie’s drive and work ethic and believes she is a quality athlete.  

Maggie will begin her Lynx career as a sprinter with other possibilities in the future.

The second Maroons’ student athlete to sign their Letter-of-Intent was Garrett Hayden, the son of Jane and John Hayden.  He has signed with the Monmouth College Fighting Scots to play football, taking the next step in athletics and academics.  

Garrett chose Monmouth because of the feeling of being accepted as part of the team and the overall welcome he felt from the students and faculty there.  Although he has not picked a specific major, Garrett expects to do well as a voracious reader, which bodes well in the college setting.  

As for his athletic career, he has been slotted for offensive guard or tackle to start due to his build and agility with movement to other positions in the future.
