Another win, another loss as Maroons near season’s end

CLINTON — The Clinton Maroons baseball team has been running on an even keel this season with some highs and some lows, but with a couple of games left (excluding more rain outs), they could eke out a winning season.  Their last two games have been at both ends of the spectrum.

The Maroons first took on the Central A&M Raiders from Moweaqua.  The Maroons started the scoring in the first inning with 3 runs and tagged on two more in the second inning.

Then, in the fourth inning, the Raiders added 2 runs to make the game interesting until the Maroons came up in the bottom half of the inning and hustled in 4 runs of their own on a grand slam homer by Drew Stacey.

The Maroons then added another insurance run in the fifth to round out their scoring.  The Raiders were not done, though, as they mounted an attack in the sixth for three runs, but it was not enough as Clinton took the win 10-5.

Drew Stacey (2-1) took the win for the Maroons pitching 6 innings and allowing 5 runs on five hits while striking out 3.  Logan Petersen came on in the 7th inning, facing 4 batters, striking out 2 and allowing one hit.  On offense, the Maroons had Tyler West going 3-4 at the plate, Logan Petersen with 2-3, and Drew Stacey with a grand slam in the fourth inning.  This elevated the home team to 8-8 overall and 6-6 in conference play.

That great performance was followed by a tough loss to the Meridian Hawks of Macon.  Both teams had great pitching and defense through the first five innings.

Then, in the 6th inning the Hawks were able to press a run across the plate, which was all they would need.  The Hawks also added two more runs in the 7th to insure their win.  Both pitchers had a complete game with the loss going to Clinton’s Garrett Wayne (1-2) who allowed three runs on four hits while striking out five and walking only one.  On offense, the Maroons had three batters with a hit each; Braden Cross, Cameron Wertz and Rustin Wertz.  T

The Maroons set at 8-9 overall and 6-7 in conference play with those two games left in the season.
