CLINTON — On Saturday, March 27, the Lady Honey Bears, of Mt. Pulaski, arrived in Clinton to play basketball against the Lady Maroons, of Clinton Junior High School (CJHS).
First up on the docket was the 7th grade game. If the Honey Bears were expecting to win, those hopes were dashed early in the first game as the Lady Maroons took an 8-3 lead in the first quarter and followed that with a 10-0 run through the second quarter, taking an 18-3 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Honey Bears fired back in the third quarter with an 11-4 run and then added more points in the final quarter (13-9) to make the final score close, but no win.
The Lady Maroons won this game 31-27. The home team was led by Avery Smith with 12 points.
Next up was the 8th grade game, which started out sluggish for both teams. The game lumbered into halftime.
The second half was a different story. The halftime talk must have been convincing to the Lady Maroons as they exploded for a 15-6 run through the third quarter, then a 13-6 fourth quarter.
The final score was 40-23. Raegan Filkin led the Lady Maroons with 11 points (all in the second half).
