CLINTON — Church members and friends of the Clinton First Church of the Nazarene celebrated the church’s 100 anniversary in August.

The church was organized on August 3, 1924 with 17 charter members, including Nellie Borden, Olive Brown, Stella Brown, Josephine Burns, Mary Burns, Winona Ellington, Albert Gentry, Alice Gentry, Harry Jones, Emma Jones, Ed Pennington, Amaziah Pollock, Margaret Pollock, Mary Jane Pollock, Fred Price and Theetta Roberts.

The Pollock Brothers and the Rev. J.L. Cox built the first Clinton Nazarene church building at 111 N. Emma Street.  The building was nicknamed the “Sheep Shed.”  It was a tar paper-covered building with a sawdust floor.

In July 1927, the church obtained finances to build a new church, but the Depression delayed construction for 14 years.  In October 1938, the congregation moved into a new church built by members, located on E. Main Street.

After 55 years in the E. Main Street location, members moved into their current church on Kleemann Drive in October 1993, where they celebrated 100 years this month.

Today, pastor of Clinton First Church of the Nazarene is Michael Taylor.  Taylor and his wife Janet have been with the church since May 2014.
