Maroons end season with loss to W-L Cardinals

CLINTON — The season may have ended for the football Maroons, but it was a winning season.

And, although the final game on Senior Night was a stinger and the team missed the playoffs, there is much in the future.  Of course there will be a void where the seniors were (10 in all), but the coaches have been playing the backups, giving them playing time and experience.

The greatest loss may be the two managers, Rebecca Holt and Kiley Myers, who are a boon to the system.  Kyle Patterson, Kolton McMath, Christian Reynolds, Cameron and Rustin Wertz, Nick Hintz, Ashton Scogin Brandon Atten, Kolby Winter, and Michael Terry will all be missed; but Clinton won with a team and most of that team remains.

The final home game was a tough game to end with.  The first quarter saw a trench war as both teams would go four downs and out.  Finally with approximately three minutes left, the Warrensburg-Latham team (the Cardinals) were able to score and adding the extra point for 7 points.

The second quarter was again back and forth with no attempts for a touchdown (TD).  The third quarter began to liven as the Maroons scored a touchdown with 9:16 left on the clock, but couldn’t convert a two point play, making the score 7-6 in favor of the Cardinals.

Then with 4:24 left in the quarter, the Cardinals made another TD and extra point to further their lead 14-6.  The Fourth quarter was the true heartbreaker of the game.  The cardinals struck first with another seven points.  Then 3 minutes later the Maroons pounded in for a TD and scored a two point conversion to make the score 21-14.

Clinton then had several opportunities on an interception and as fumble recovery but came up short.  The Maroons’ last possession was an all-out push, ending with a pass into the end zone to tie the game that went through the receivers hands for an incompletion.

A tough loss but still a winning season to build on in the coming year.

For the Maroons, Tyrese Petty had 19 carries for 111 yards and touchdown, while quarterback Ty Berter had 10 carries for38 yards and a touchdown plus 8 of 20 passing for 88 yards.  Both players will be back next year.
