Maroons now 4-0 with 35-0 win over Hawks

MACON — On a beautiful late summers eve, the Clinton Maroons invaded the home of the Meridian Hawks.  The Hawks were looking to upset the 3-0 Maroons and gain a win of their own and gain some home field confidence.

The game was an old fashioned trenches type of battle with flags everywhere and penalties galore.  Even with the majority of calls appearing to be against Clinton, the team persevered to hold the Hawks to their own end of the field.  The Maroons kept the pressure on Meridian all evening long, beginning in the first quarter.

After throwing an interception, the Maroons recovered a Meridian fumble and converted the recovery into a touchdown and point after for a 7-0 lead.  In the second quarter, the Maroons added insult to injury by adding two more touchdowns (TD) and extra points.  Kolby Winter ran the first TD and after an interception by Clayton Welch, Tyrese Petty ran in a TD brining the score to 21-0 at the halftime break.

The third quarter was a battle in the trenches until late in the period, when Tyrese Petty again found his way into the end zone for another Maroon TD.  With the extra point the score went to 28-0 and the Hawks just trying to get out of their own side of the field.

The Hawks finally flew into action in the fourth quarter swooping in for a couple of interceptions but could not capitalize on the opportunities and allowing the Maroons’ Ty Petty to score another TD making the final score (with the extra point) 35-0 in favor of the Maroons.

For the winning Maroons, the top player of the game was Tyrese Petty with 4 touchdowns on 22 carries for 111 yards.  Quarterback Ty Berter completed 13 of 24 passes for 167 yards and had 3 interceptions.  Kolby Winter caught 4 passes for 47 yards and ran 12 times for 76 yards and one TD.  Christian Reynolds had 5 receptions for 60 yards while Joao Cocenza kicked all five extra points.  The Maroons are now 4-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play.

The Maroons’ next game is Friday, September 21, at home against Tuscola.
