CLINTON — The Lady Maroons track and field season has come to an end with the appearance of hree athletes competing in the state finals, in Monticello.
In the preliminary rounds on Friday, May 18, Payne Turney sealed a place in the Saturday finals with a wire-to-wire win in her heat of the 800-meter run with a blistering 2:18:12 run, surpassing her own varsity and freshman/sophomore school records.
In the field events, Riley Pruser was able to clear 4’11”, but was short of qualifying for the finals, and Kolby Weiss vaulted through several rounds topping out at 10’6” and also just missing finals qualification.
As for the track finals, Payne is always up for a challenge and after placing 9th last year in the 800 as a freshman, she ran a 2:18:92 for a seventh place finish.
Payne returned to the finish line to check on and assist fellow competitors who had fallen to the track at the finish.
