Maroons fall to Bulldogs in cool start to season

Posted

CLINTON — The Clinton Maroons finally were able to play their home baseball season opener on Wednesday, March 21.

The Maroons hosted the Mahomet-Seymouir Bulldogs at Evans field on a brisk, chilly afternoon.  And, the wind was blowing out, which became a factor in the game.

The game started well for the Maroons as they held the Bulldogs scoreless for two innings, while exploding in the second inning with a five run offense.  However, this was short lived as the Bulldogs found their own offensive niche in the third inning scoring 6 times.

Then, the fateful fourth inning appeared on the field, and the tenacity of the Bulldogs came to full fruition as they added 9 more runs, while stifling any offense the maroons tried to mount.  The Maroons had a chance to come back in the third with bases loaded, but the effort went away in the wind with three straight strikeouts to end the inning.

The Bulldogs took the win at the end of the fifth inning on the 10-run rule, winning 15-5.

With the crazy spring weather, there have been no follow-up games to this point.  The Maroons are now 0-2 on the start of the season.  Maroons used four pitchers in the game with Keaton Thayer taking the loss.

Highlights from the plate included Braden Cross hitting 2-3 with 2 RBIs including his towering home run to right field and Rustin Wertz going 1-1 at the plate on a double with 2 RBIs.
