CLINTON — While the Maroons were ranked significantly higher than the Oilers starting the season, they might not have expected such an early success against the southwestern Illinois school.

The Maroons scored early, including a extra point conversion,  in a first quarter that was all Clinton’s.  The Maroons were helped by a couple of Oilers penalties and a pair of successful recoveries on Oilers fumbles.

The Maroons finished the 1st quarter with a big 34-0 lead.

Oilers defense came alive in the 2nd quarter, managing to hold the Maroons to 14 points, but they were unable to harness the Maroons’ strong offense.  Clinton went into halftime up 48-0.

Oilers defense was more effective against the Maroons in the second half of the game but Clinton still managed to score, while the Oilers failed generate any points.

Clinton scored 6 in the 3rd quarter, picking up another 3 in the 4th to take their first win on the new CHS field 57-0.

The Maroons will next play on the road in Alton against the Marquette Catholic Explorers on September 6 before returning for a home game against Tremont on September 13.

Also, during the August 30 game, players of the Clinton JFL team and cheer squad were introduced, as well as performances by the Clinton High School band, M-Squad and cheerleaders.
