County struggling to hire deputies

Salaries, benefits playing a part in officers going to outside departments

CLINTON — Sheriff Mike Walker recently asked the county to consider increasing starting pay for deputies when budget planning begins later this year.

“We just aren’t getting any applicants,” Walker said.

“In the jail, I think we’re two short,” Walker said.  “We had one graduate last Friday, and we have another one starting the eight-week academy on Sunday.”

He said it was a struggle to get applicants and some applicants for public safety work fail to pass the background checks.

Walker’s comments came during the August 15 county public safety committee meeting.

“We were just starting to climb out of all the unrest, the George Floyd incident, and then we have the Sangamon County incident that hit closer to home,” Walker said.
