Weldon Springs flag site named for local Scouts supporter

CLINTON — About 60 people on Sunday attended the dedication of a memorial flag site at Black Locust Group Camp, located at Weldon Springs State Recreation Area.  It was the culmination of an Eagle Scout project by a local Scout member.

Local BSA Troop 1142 Scout Zander Cicenas led the project to perform landscaping, install a bench, base and memorial plaque and erect a new flag pole in memory of long-time Scouting supporter Harry “Ray” Wheeler, who passed away in 2019.

Scouts raised a flag during the ceremony on Sunday.

Money to start the project became available in 2019, and another Scout began the planning, but COVID 19 restrictions temporarily halted the plan.

The Scout who started the project aged out of Scouting, and work went dormant until Cicenas took it on, beginning from scratch.  Money from memorial service contributions as well as from Weldon Springs Foundation, Lowes and Home Depot covered the costs of completing the project.

Wheeler was active in the community, Weldon Springs and Scouting.
