School board gets survey of tentative budget

CLINTON — Superintendent of Schools Drew Goebel gave school board members a survey of portions of the district’s tentative budget during the recent August school board meeting.

Goebel said the district’s auditor goes over the final budget each year before it is published in the newspaper of record for the county.

“The biggest difference between the tentative budget and final budget, I would say, is that salaries and benefits, which is a huge part of our budget, are not included in our tentative budget,” Goebel said.

Gobel said the district was in the process of uploading the new salaries “into the system.”

“We’re kind of wrapping that up, and once those go in, I’d say in the next week or so, then I will start running on my budget for salaries and benefits and all those other things that make up a good chunk of it,” Goebel said.

Revenue for the district’s levy filed at the end of 2023 will begin coming in in September.

“So, when I have those figures, I will be able to plug those into the final budget number,” Goebel said.

Tax revenue to the district will be up this year, based on equalized assessed valuation (EAV), at $20.6 million, up from the previous year of $18.9 million.

“We’re going to have an additional revenue stream in terms of the levy,” Goebel said.

Goebel explained the district’s overall EAV increased, resulting in the higher revenue, but the amount the district taxes did not increase, i.e., the district’s tax rate, which is regulated by the state.
