CLINTON — Rep. Bill Mitchell announced his retirement from office during a media conference held Thursday in the DeWitt County Courthouse. Mitchell said he would not seek reelection in 2018, retiring when his term ends in Jan. 2019.
"It has been an honor to serve the people of Central Illinois in the General Assembly," Mitchell said. "I want to thank my constituents for allowing me the privilege of serving them for nearly two decades now."
Mitchell also thanked his family, friends and neighbors for their support over the years.
Mitchell has served in the Illinois House since 1999. He also previously served on the Decatur City Council and as Decatur Mayor Pro Tem from 1997-1998.
Mitchell helped lead the successful drive for legislation in 2016 to keep Clinton Power Station open for an additional 10 years.
