CLINTON — In its last home outing, the Lady Maroons volleyball team faced a determined team in the Roanoke-Benson Lady Rockets.

The evening began with the junior varsity home team winning, but the main event was yet to come.

As the varsity teams took the court, the opposition started with six straight points. After several volleys, the Lady Rockets went on a five-point tear and seemed to have the first set of the night in hand.

However, the Lady Maroons didn’t buckle.  They kept digging, blocking and spiking through several three- and four-point runs to tie the set at 23 points.  The Lady Maroons then took the set home with the final two points for the come-from-behind win, 25-23.  In this set both teams took the maximum time outs allowed.

In the second set, the home team took an early four-point lead only to see it slip away.

The opposition had several short runs putting them in what again appeared to be a safe place.  But, as before, the Lady Maroons dug in and fought back with a five-point run to tie the set at 16 points.  The opposition then took its second and final time out of the set.

It was anyone’s set, going toe-to-toe, spike-for -spike until, at 20-19 in favor of the home team, they had a four- point run to 24 points, when the Lady Rockets halted them once again.

This time, the home team prevailed, halting the opposition at 20 points and winning, 25-20.

The Lady Maroons took the match, 2-0 for the win.
