Lady Maroons volleyball continues winning close matches

CLINTON — The Clinton High School (CHS) Lady Maroons have been having some good times lately, coming through on close matches.

On September 7, the ladies hosted the Lady Rockets of Tolono Unity.  The freshmen took out the opposition in two sets to begin the evening’s events.  From there it was down hill.

The Lady Rockets manhandled the Junior Varsity (JV) Lady Maroons for a 15-point first set win and a 10-point second set win.

The varsity then took over, took their places on the floor and held tough in the first set but losing by 6, then falling back to lose the second set  by 13 points.

The Lady Maroons went 2-0 (freshmen), 0-2 (JV), and 0-2 (varsity).

Next on the home court was a meeting with the Rantoul Lady Eagles.  However, the Lady Maroons freshmen clipped their wings, coming out on top.

The home team took the first set 25 -10 and the second set 25-9 for a two set sweep.

The JV crew had a tougher time with the opposition.  The Lady Eagles made the first set win hard for the Lady Maroons keeping very close but finally giving in to the home team; Lady Maroons 25, hapless Lady Eagles 23.

The varsity then arrived to complete the evening’s festivities.  Although the sets were respectable, the Lady Maroons never let the match get out of hand.  The home team won 25-20 and 25-18 for a clean sweep.

After their Clinton Invitational on 9/11, the Lady Maroons faced the ever -threatening Tuscola Lady Warriors here at home.  This was a shortened night with no freshman match (Covid protocols) and it was senior night.

The JV team had a difficult time dispatching the opposition with a 25-20 win in the first set and then had a commanding lead in the second set to see the Lady Eagles score 10 points within minutes to cut the lead.

Still, Clinton won 25-21.  A two-set win for the home team.

The varsity struggled in the first set, staying even with the opposition until at 15 points, when the Lady Eagles struck hard for the 25-16 win.  The Lady Maroons battled tough in the second set to get back into the match for a senior night win, but alas, the opposition squeaked by with a 27-25 win, downing the varsity home team.

Seniors also were celebrated, The seniors are (alphabetically); Phoenix Bieber, Mallory Cyrulik, Kianna Easton, Marlee Fatheree, Chloe Griffin, Kylie Raymer, and Katie Wherry.
