Lady Maroons varsity edges out Monticello

CLINTON — The Lady Maroons softball team finally got onto a dry field to face the ever-tough Monticello Lady Sages.

These two teams have been serious rivals ever since the Lady Sages knocked the Lady Maroons out of the playoffs on a seventh inning fluke play a few seasons ago.

The game began with the Lady Maroons taking a one-run lead in the first inning only to lose it in the second inning with a 2-1 deficit.

The home crew then bounced back with 4 runs in the third inning for a 5-2 lead, which stood for a couple of innings.

In the fifth inning, the Lady Sages tried to mount an attack, but could muster only one more run.  Then, in the sixth inning the Lady Maroons took a sizable lead (10-3) with 5 more runs.

But even this lead was in jeopardy as the Lady Sages made one more charge in the final inning, scoring five runs of their own before the inning ended on strike outs.

Clinton still managed to keep the edge with a final score Clinton 10, Monticello 8.

In the ensuing Junior Varsity (JV) game the Lady Sages exacted their revenge by scoring early with numerous runs (10 total).  The Lady Maroons made a valiant effort late in the game earning four runs, but it was not enough.  Monticello won the JV game 10-4.
