Leland Carlyle Junkert

CLINTON — Leland Carlyle Junkert, 89, passed away peacefully at his daughter’s home on February 12, 2024. 

He was born in DeWitt County, Ill. on January 8, 1935, to Beulah (Helmick) Junkert-Oakley and Otto Junkert.  He graduated from Moore High School in Farmer City, in 1953. Leland joined the U.S. Army in November  1955 and was stationed with the 2nd Division Infantry in Fairbanks, AK as an Information Communications Specialist.  He loved to tell stories of the times he was able to spend in Alaska with his brother, Major Owen Junkert.

He married Sue Sullivan ,of Maroa, on March 23, 1960.  They had two children, Darin Junkert and Dodie Junkert. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Sue Junkert, his brother, Owen (MaryEllen) Junkert and sister, Norma (Cliff) Woodman.

He is survived by his sister, Rosalie Fitzgerald, his son, Darin Junkert and his daughter, Dodie Junkert.  He is also survived by several in-laws and nieces and nephews. 

Leland worked at Wallace Computer Services from where he retired after 35 years.  He enjoyed playing pool, fishing and golfing.  In his later years, he enjoyed playing cards with his friends, Paul Nothnagle and Ray Moss.  An extra thank you to his brother-in-law Dorwin (Dode) Sullivan for the freshly caught fish dinner.

There will be no service at this time.  Central Cremation has been entrusted with arrangements.  There will be a celebration of life for both Leland and Sue Junkert at a later date this summer.
