WAYNESVILLE — Vernon L. “Hop” Murphy, 68, of Waynesville, passed away at 9:06 p.m. on June 3, 2020, at his family residence, Waynesville.
Services will be conducted at a later date. The family entrusted Calvert Funeral Home, Clinton, with cremation rites.
Memorials may be directed to Waynesville Fire Department or the Wapella Fire Department.
Hop was born on September 30, 1951, in Lincoln, the son of Elwin Patrick and Lura Elizabeth (Crum) Murphy. He married Kathy Welch on May 5, 1973 in Wapella.
Survivors include his wife, Kathy Murphy, Waynesville; sons, Patrick (Angie) Murphy, Heyworth; and Andy (Holly) Murphy, Waynesville; daughter, Kim (Matt) Morlock, Waynesville; grandchildren, Kyle; Kali; Ian; Ellie; Audrey; Izzy Murphy, Khloe; Kael Morlock, brothers, Melvin “Mick” (Ginny) Murphy, Clinton; Marvin (Karen) Murphy, Clinton. Along with his dog and constant companion, Lily.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents.
Hop served in the U.S. Army for two years after being drafted in 1971. He farmed most of his life until 2001, then he retired after 12 years in 2018 from Maschhoffs.
Hop enjoyed his grandchildren’s many events, such as dance, softball, baseball, wrestling, football, and watching sheep shows at the fairs. He never knew a stranger.
