WELLS, Minn. — Richard Gene Winstead, age 79, of Wells, Minn., formerly of Clinton, died on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2019, surrounded by family at his daughter’s home, in Walters, Minn. 

A celebration of life visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 18, 2019, from noon -3 p.m. at Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home, in Wells, Minn.  Interment will be in Rice Lake Cemetery-Foster Township, Faribault County, Minn. Bruss-Heitner Funeral Home, in Wells, is assisting the family.

Richard Gene was born on October 5, 1939, the son of Clyde and Hallie (Cobb) Winstead in Clinton.  He was united in marriage to Shirley Louise Rhodes on February 14, 1960, in Dixon, Ill. 

Dick owned Winstead’s Pallet Salvage in Sterling, Ill., and worked at Northwest Steel and Wire.  Dick loved to invest in real estate.  He also enjoyed coon hunting, thoroughbred horse racing and pigeon racing. In 2015, Dick and Shirley moved to Wells, Minn. to be closer to family.   

Dick is survived by his children, Steven Winstead, of Wells; Anthony (Lisa) Winstead, of Dixon; Ill., Daniel Winstead, and Christina (Steven) Hargis of Wells, Minn.; daughter-in-law: Tammy Winstead, of Wells; 11 grandchildren, Benjamin Winstead, Cody (Laura) Winstead, Caleb (Kymberly) Winstead, Nicole Winstead, Mitchell Winstead, Taylor Winstead, Sherilyn (Travis) Corwell, Shannon Winstead, Dylan Winstead, Isiah Hargis (Samantha Lampman) and Sidney Hargis (Melinda Lopez); 12 great-grandchildren, Brody, Bryce, Brantely, Cheyenne, Max, Royce and baby girl Hargis on the way; constant companion, his Jack Russell Terrier, Buster; brothers, Clyde (Ruth) Winstead, of Chipley, Fla. and Tommy Winstead, of Clinton; along with many nieces, nephews and their families and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Shirley (2017), and son Michael (2018).
